Event 7 - The U.S. Open @ Gateway National

In the tradition of Carnoustie, Royal Lytham, St. Anne’s Old Links, and other famous seaside courses in the British Isles, Gateway National is a first-class links course even though it’s not within sight of the ocean. Actually, it’s not within a thousand miles of the ocean, but we digress. Designed by renowned golf course architect, Keith Foster, and developed by Tim Crowley and Denny Walters, Gateway National remains the only true links-style golf course in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

Gateway National offers you the rare opportunity to return to the rich traditions of the game. Rolling links, separated by gentle mounds, meander through lush, green pasturelands. Tall grasses, lakes, wood-tie bunkers, and occasional giant cottonwoods complete the landscape. In view of the magnificent Gateway Arch, you will cross occasional stone bridges, glide on raised boardwalks through quiet wetlands, and enjoy play on the only public course, bent grass fairways within hundreds of miles. Laid out through native grasses, it’s easy to forget you are just minutes away from the action in downtown St. Louis, and not tucked away deep in the Scottish Highlands.

The layout of Gateway National takes into account the factor the wind will play on the course and allows the player the options of running the ball up or flying it onto the greens. This will test the player’s ability with shots seldom called for on ordinary courses. The bentgrass turf that carpets each fairway, offers players the perfect firm surface from which to strike a crisp approach. Tall native grasses frame each of the generous fairways, but will test both the players’ skill and temperament should his ball find itself among them. Adding to the challenge on each hole is a host of fiendish bunkers along with natural wetlands and Scottish style burns (streams) that wait to devour any ball that strays too far off line!

A fearsome 7178 yard par 71 from the championship tees, our course has four sets of more manageable tees for the enjoyment of those not quite up to the challenge of the PGA Tour caliber layout. Pick the length that suits your enjoyment of the game. The large greens, once reached, offer ample opportunity for birdies! With such smooth rolling surfaces, the player has no one but himself to blame should the ball not fall into the cup.

Event 9 - The Open & The Links at Dardenne

Tucked away in the quaint, scenic village of Dardenne Prairie, in O’Fallon, Missouri, is our lovely 18-hole, championship golf course, The Links at Dardenne. In true links fashion, the course was designed with the flavor of the courses of yesteryear with all the modern conveniences of today’s game. In an area rich with Missouri heritage, the Links offers players expansive Zoysia grass fairways and tees, along with beautifully manicured bent grass greens. Playing a ‘player friendly’ 6568 yards from the back tees, and offering three additional sets of tees at 6144, 5746, and 4875 yards, our course is truly one that can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities.

Your round at The Links at Dardenne will be played in environmentally sensitive areas where special attention has been paid to preserving the natural habitat of water fowl, deer, fox and other animals and plants indigenous to the area. While the old adage “There is not a bad hole out there!” is certainly true, several key holes will define your round. The 395-yard sixth hole is a great par 4 that requires two good shots. Your challenge starts with a semi-blind tee shot, with more room to the right and left than may appear off the tee. If you make it to the bottom of the hill you are only left with a short iron into a shallow green. However, most will be playing a 140-200 yard second from a downhill stance. Four is a good score on the sixth, especially with a right pin placement. The 556-yard eighth hole is majestic par 5 that is considered our signature hole. The entire hole wraps around a marshy low land area, with long grass guarding the left side. Two good shots will leave a 125-100 yard shot to an elevated green, guarded in front by a deep bunker on the right hand side.

Playoff Stage 1 @ The Quarry at Crystal Springs

In 1888, the Crystal Springs Quarry was established and built upon a jutting bluff, overlooking the Missouri River Valley. The quarry received its name from many clear springs winding throughout the property. More than a century later, the historic quarry site has been converted into one of the area’s premier public golf facilities.

The golf course maintains an environmental feel with Federally Protected Wetlands, and untouched “Environmentally Sensitive Areas”, as well as vast lakes and native prairie grass areas. The course lends itself to be not only a great test of golf, but also a rich habitat for wildlife. The course is surrounded on three sides by woods, and on the fourth side by Creve Coeur Park. Unlike so many typical modern designs, you will enjoy nature here, not someone else’s subdivision.

The Quarry at Crystal Springs is committed to providing an unsurpassed level of customer service and satisfaction. We have gained a reputation for outstanding conditions, with consistent, bentgrass greens, and zoysia fairways which allow carts to leave the path during most of the golf season. With five sets of tees, The Quarry at Crystal Springs offers an enjoyable, challenging experience for players of all abilities.

Playoff Stage 2 @ Stonewolf GC

When the name Jack Nicklaus is associated with your golf course, it can’t help but be upper echelon. And when you’re lucky enough (as we are here at Stonewolf Golf Club) to feature a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course, you’re among the best facilities in the nation. The “Signature” designation means that Mr. Nicklaus himself, “The Golden Bear,” trod the course, played a hand in the design, the shaping – every facet of this jewel.

He didn’t fax this one in! Stonewolf is just the fourth public access course in the United States designed by Nicklaus. This is one of only four Jack Nicklaus Signature courses in Illinois and Missouri!

How does it play? Very well, thank you! Along with the Jack Nicklaus name, you get Jack Nicklaus golf. Fun and fair on a picturesque, well-designed course. And yet the course offers challenge, with five sets of tees that allow you to play it as easy or hard as you want.

We keep Stonewolf open all year as conditions allow. And with our Zoysia grass, you get a good game in any condition!

The Championship @ Spencer T. Olin GC

Spencer T. Olin Golf Course is approximately 30 minutes from downtown St. Louis in the 750 acre Gordon F. Moore Community Park.  Arnold Palmer designed this course layout at the request of his life long friend of over forty years, Spencer T. Olin, founder of Olin Industries.  Mr. Palmer’s goal was to design a course challenging enough for the skilled golfer, but yet enjoyable for the average golfer.  As a testament to these “Palmer” standards, Spencer T. Olin hosted the 1996 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Link Championship, the ESPN televised 1999 U.S. Men’s Amateur Public Links Championship,  Web.Com Tour (KornFerry Tour) Qualifying, U.S. Amateur Qualifying, and the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association’s East Side Amateur Championship.

At nearly 7,000 yards, this Championship layout challenges golfers of all skill levels, but with eight sets of tees to choos from, all players will enjoy the layout.  The course is deceptively “open” and places a premium on accurate iron play in order to get the ball close to the pin.  The boldly contoured Penncross bentgrass greens are particularly challenging, while zoysia tees and zoysia fairways provide excellent ball-striking surfaces.  Roughs are a combination of Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, and Jamestown fescue.

Spencer T. Olin Community Golf Course is the centerpiece of perhaps the finest municipal family recreation and sports center in the Midwest, The Gordon F. Moore Community Park. The park features a lake for fishing, a pro-quality tennis facility, a magnificent rose garden and some of the best soccer and softball/baseball facilities anywhere. Spencer T. Olin Golf Course has corporate and group outing capabilities and shower and locker facilities. Traditions Grill offers an array of sandwiches and beverages. Our Traditions Grill is also available for group events from 16 to 288 players.

Spencer T. Olin’s fantastic practice facility features an immense two tiered grass tee practice range, practice putting green, practice chipping green, and practice bunker.
